Is SEO dead?

This question has been on our clients’ minds a lot lately. The rising concern around AI and its impact on SEO as we know it.

The simple answer? No. Search will never die. People will always search for answers to their questions, solutions to their problems. It’s just the way we search that's changing.

Let’s talk about what’s really happening, why it matters, and how you can adapt to the future of search.

Google’s AI Overviews

AI's transformative impact on SEO

Search is no longer just about ten blue links. With the arrival of tools like Google’s AI Overviews and conversational assistants (LLMs) like ChatGPT, people are beginning to interact with information in new ways. These tools provide direct answers without users having to visit a website, changing how visibility and traffic are distributed.

Take Chegg, for example. Their traffic dropped by 49% in one year, partly due to generative AI serving answers directly in the SERPs. (source) Even HubSpot, who are often seen as the gold standard of B2B blogs, have seen a sharp decline in organic traffic. Dropping from 13.5 million in November to 8.6 million in December 24, according to Semrush.

For many businesses, this shift is understandably worrying. But it also opens up new opportunities.

We're also seeing the emergence of Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO). While traditional SEO focused on ranking in search engines, GEO is about ensuring your content is accurately cited and used by AI tools. Optimising for this future means understanding how AI tools consume and summarise content. It also means creating content that is structured, clear, and original - the kind of content AI models are more likely to pick up. We have a whole separate blog on The new term on the block: GEO if you want to learn more.

Meanwhile, content creation is getting smarter. Tools like Clearscope and Chatsonic are helping marketers identify search intent, refine messaging, and optimise readability. AI shouldn't replace human insight, though. Your brand voice, creativity and strategic thinking still make the difference between generic and standout content. (Here’s some of our thoughts as an agency on how AI is shaping the creative industry)

SEO Traffic dilution

Challenges and considerations

Traffic dilution

When AI answers questions directly, fewer users may click through to your site. This is why offering content with added value - depth, expertise, personal insight - is more important than ever.

Bias and fairness

AI models can inherit bias from training data. That means your content might be overlooked or misrepresented if not crafted with clarity and authority.

Over-reliance on automation

Leaning too heavily on AI can result in stale, repetitive content. Human oversight ensures that relevance and creativity are preserved.

Loss of traditional ranking value

With search engines integrating AI-generated summaries, optimising solely for keyword rankings won’t be enough. The game is shifting towards topical authority and trusted sources. Businesses need to adapt by focusing on content that offers unique value beyond what AI summaries can provide.

SEO Strategic adaptations

Strategic adaptations you need to be aware of

SEO isn’t dead. But the playbook is changing. Here’s what to focus on:

  • Think beyond ranking. Instead of chasing keyword positions, aim to be the source AI pulls from.
  • Create with originality and authority. Offer unique perspectives and expert knowledge that add something new.
  • Structure matters. Use clear headings, concise language and schema markup to help machines understand your content.
  • Allow crawler access. Make sure your robots.txt file allows access to web crawlers used by AI platforms (or don't, depending on your strategy - read about the pros and cons of allowing AI bots to crawl your website here)
  • Stay adaptive. Monitor AI-driven search changes and be ready to test new formats, tools and platforms.
  • Prioritise human-led strategy. AI tools are helpful assistants, not replacements. Keep strategy, empathy and creativity at the core.

The role of SEO is evolving alongside the way we search. AI isn’t killing SEO, it’s transforming it. If anything, it’s making content quality, strategy, and originality more essential than ever.
